Automation Software Case Study: Luxury Yachts Cruise with Movicon

Luxury boats are becoming safer, more comfortable and easier to operate thanks in large part due to advanced supervision and control through Movicon.

In the last few years, the yacht building industry has dramatically improved its technical side by designing yachts with PC solutions, heavy duty hardware and advanced safety devices.

Leading the way in this effort is MR Automation Company, an Italian company with extensive background in automation for watercraft and deep sea pipelines.

MR Automation has developed a control system they call Dolphin. The Dolphin system is a PC based command and control architecture for watercraft based entirely on Movicon SCADA/HMI software.

MR Automation chose Movicon because it provides complete supervisory control needed for luxury yachts like advanced GPS, weather reports and even a man overboard navigation memory program. In addition, Movicon was the only system running Windows CE that would guarantee I/O logic control for PLCs.

The supervisory components include a main touch panel with thin film transistors (a type of technology used to improve the image quality of an LCD) and several secondary touch panel stations also with thin film transistor technology.

All the touch panels have Windows CE operating systems. The peripherals are connected to a remote I/O based on Modbus protocol. The bus speed is set at 115kb to ensure superior performance and fast answering speed.

In addition to the Modbus network, the meteorological station sensors and the GPS system are connected to the touch panel. All information is controlled by an embedded software system.

Onboard Control

By using the touch panel screen, the ship owner or captain can control all lights, inboard and outside navigation pumps, fuel levels, fresh water and sea water levels.

The system displays electric parameters of the DC batteries and AC network including generators and connection cables. All data can be displayed and recorded on archived files.

The Dolphin system bases its architecture entirely on Movicon. This makes

The Dolphin system also manages all of the following:

  • meteorological data
  • tank and bilge water levels
  • anchor control and mooring devices
  • alarms and message displays

    Ultimate Owner Convenience

    In addition to onboard control and management, the Dolphin system has been designed to provide complete yacht management via phone by using SMS. In fact, it is possible to send text messages to command items (air conditioning, lights, pumps, etc.) and to be informed of electric network conditions and ship latitude and longitude coordinates.

    The Dolphin system bases its architecture entirely on Movicon. This makes
    it possible to integrate vision and control of I/Os while decreasing costs.

    This feature allows the ship owner to prepare the ship for departure before arrival or to simply keep informed of ship status when not onboard.

    Thanks to the Windows CE support, Dolphin can be installed on Pocket PCs which permit the owner to get all ship statuses on small devices through a wireless network.

    The Movicon system also provides remote control via internet and IP camera integration for displaying interior and exterior images of the yacht.

    The Dolphin system has been installed on numerous yachts that are now sailing the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas. Through their success in providing yacht owners with greater control and comfort, MR Automation has become a household name in the luxury boating world.
